guide to a weekend in bangkok thailand

Bangkok is chaotic, vibrant, overwhelming, and amazing. At first, it can seem soooo overwhelming to create a guide to a weekend in Bangkok. Where should I stay, what should I eat, what should I focus on, etc. There are thousands of options for each. But that’s where I can come in to break things down and make it more accessible if it’s your first time visiting.

No matter how many times I go, the energy of the city revitalizes me. I’ve been to Bangkok 5+ times (and have lived in Thailand for over two years), and while the sheer size of the city can be daunting, I’ve learned how to make the most of a weekend trip without getting totally lost in the madness.

If you’re looking for a perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and culture in Bangkok without feeling like you need a vacation from your vacation, this guide is for you. I’m a mid-range traveler who enjoys off the beaten path type of activities. Keep reading for my hidden gem guide to a weekend in Bangkok, Thailand:

Hidden gem guide to a weekend in Bangkok:

Where to stay: Hyatt Place Sukhumvit

If you’re using Chase credit card points, LISTEN UP—Hyatt Place Sukhumvit is one of the best value redemptions in the city.

  • Why I love it:
    • Central location in Sukhumvit (easy to get around!)
    • Rooftop pool with skyline views
    • Complimentary breakfast (SUCH a good deal)
    • Fun rooftop bar with live music
    • Super modern and comfortable rooms
  • Cost: 3,500 points/night in the off-season

This hotel is a steal if you’re using points and offers all the comfort you need after a day of exploring. I’ve stayed here at least 4 times and have gotten late check-out perks and free drinks at the bar for being a recurring guest. The service here is truly unmatched!

Relax: Yunomori Onsen & Spa Sathorn 10

Bangkok can be exhausting, so good thing they have some of the best spas in the world. After navigating the crowded streets and chaotic traffic, a trip to the Japanese-style Yunomori Onsen & Spa Sathorn 10  is the perfect way to unwind.

  • What to expect:
    • Japanese-Thai-inspired hot baths separated by men and women
    • Onsen pools of varying temperatures
    • Heavenly massages that will leave you feeling brand new
    • 500 baht entrance fee for a day pass
  • Why I love it: The tranquil ambiance feels worlds away from Bangkok’s chaos. There is a beautiful cafe and relaxing nap room where your body can fully rest into itself.

Explore: Benchakitti Park & spot the monitor lizards

Forget Lumpini Park—Benchakitti Park is my favorite green space in Bangkok. It’s lush, spacious, and much less crowded than other parks. Plus, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot the giant monitor lizards casually basking in the sun. I freaked out the first time I saw them because they look like crocodiles lol.

  • Why it’s a hidden gem:
    • Stunning boardwalks over the water
    • Quiet and peaceful (a rare find in Bangkok!)
    • Feels like a jungle escape in the middle of the city
    • It’s free!
  • Best time to go: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat

Adventure: Sunset boat party on Bangkok Island

If you plan your trip around one thing, let it be this—a Bangkok Island sunset boat party

  • What makes it epic:
    • Floating down the river while the skyline glows at sunset
    • Live music and DJs onboard
    • Fun crowd and amazing vibes
    • International crowd of interesting people from all over the world
    • 500 baht for entry + a free drink
  • Why I love it: It’s one of the most unique nightlife experiences in Bangkok. Unlike Khao San Road (which can be a bit much), this is a chill but lively way to experience Bangkok at night. I went for the celebration of the Indian festival Holi and had a huge paint war which was so much fun!

My favorite thing to do in Bangkok 😝🇹🇭 & i’ve been 5+ times!📍Bangkok Island is the event booking that a lot of expats and locals use to have a fun night out! This specific event was celebrating Holi 🧡💛💚🩷 #traveltok #bangkokthailand #thingstodoinbangkok #thailandtravel

Culture: Wat Arun & hidden temples along the river

You can’t visit Bangkok without seeing a temple—my best recommendation is to take a local boat and explore some of the hidden gems along the river.

  • Start at Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)
    • One of the most iconic temples in Bangkok
    • Best visited early in the morning before the crowds
  • Hidden temple adventure:
    • Hop on a local boat for 20 baht and explore smaller, lesser-known temples along the river.
    • It’s so fun and gives you a peek into Bangkok’s old-world charm.

Eat: The Best Thai food in the world

I could write an entire guide just on where to eat in Bangkok, but for a weekend trip, these are my top (veggie-friendly) picks:

  • MAY VEGGIE HOME EXPRESS [Sukhumvit23]
  • Breakfast Story Phrom Phong
  • VEGANERIE Concept
  • Vistro-Vegan Cafe & Restaurant
  • Brewski
  • Taye Ethiopian Restaurant
  • Din Tai Fung Central Embassy Branch
  • Rocket Coffee Bar
  • Broccoli Revolution Sukhumvit 49

Off-the-Beaten-Path: Biking through Bang Kachao

Did you know Bangkok has a hidden island? Most people don’t—but Bang Kachao is a lush green escape just outside the city, often called the “Lungs of Bangkok.” Check out these bicycle tours for an intimate look into the jungle of Bangkok.

  • How to get there:
    • Take a short boat ride from Khlong Toei
    • Rent a bicycle and explore the island / go with a tour guide to learn about the island
  • Why it’s amazing:
    • It feels like you’ve left the city entirely
    • Cute cafes, quiet bike paths, and tons of nature
    • A much-needed breath of fresh air from the Bangkok chaos

Final Thoughts: Guide to a weekend in Bangkok

Bangkok can feel like a lot—and it is! But if you focus on these must-do hidden gems, you’ll experience a balance of adventure, relaxation, and culture.

  • Day 1: Arrive, relax at Yunomori Onsen, explore Benchakitti Park, and feast on Thai food.
  • Day 2: Visit Wat Arun, take a local boat to hidden temples, and dance the night away on a sunset boat party.
  • Day 3: Bike through Bang Kachao before catching your flight out.

Follow this itinerary, and you’ll leave Bangkok feeling energized, cultured, and already planning your next trip back. Because trust me—you will want to come back! Bangkok is addicting!

xx Gracie
